What is behind Alley Ink/George Alley Dance?
AlleyInk is a pick-up performance company created by artists of various medium and driven with a common obsession to create work that engages our multiple intelligences and that is self-interested in nature.
The work of Alley INK and its’ creative director George Alley gazes beyond the normal scope of gender, race, sexual orientation and class as these categorizations are often over-worked to create modernist propaganda that serves to minimize the qualities of human expression.
Instead, the work of Alley Ink delves into the psychological makeup of the characters the work creates. “The mask is more interesting than the face,” is one of George Alley’s most well known expressions and these characters masks’ are individual, and are made from fragments of subtext found within myth, multi-media and personal experience.
Much of the reason Alley Ink Dance is interested in promoting the individual is the belief that it is only through self-interest that the role of art in human life can transform man’s widest metaphysical ideas. By selective reproduction of reality, into a physical form—a work of art—he can comprehend and thus respond to emotionally.
Modernist dance forms tend to be driven by two of our eight intelligences: Intrapersonal, (or learning through group experience), and Kinesthetic.
AlleyInk believes that all of our intelligences are equally important. Defined by education scholar Howard Garder, our eight intelligences consist of logical, verbal/linguistic, musical, kinesthetic, visual/spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic.
Reality exists independent of consciousness, and it is only through using all of our multiple intelligences that an individual person can be in contact with this reality. To deny the capabilities of all our forms of accessing information cripples the dance form and limits its’ capability to be transformed into a “work of art.”
Alley Ink makes art out of its’ pursuit of its own happiness and rational self-interest; that the only social system consistent with this morality is full respect for individual rights, embodied in pure laissez-faire capitalism.
